Length of Service
Volunteers are asked to serve a minimum of thirteen months and may serve in a variety of positions, including therapists, nurses, teachers, librarians or administrative positions. NPH does not accept short-term volunteers. Volunteers begin service in January and July.
Volunteers must be at least 21 years of age and in good health. We accept couples only if they are married.
Spanish language skills are critical for volunteer success. While we do not require that volunteers are fluent in Spanish upon arrival in the homes, applicants’ Spanish must be good enough to get along in daily activities. Some positions, such as nurses, teachers, and therapists require higher levels of Spanish. Volunteer applicants who do not have advanced Spanish language skills will be required to attend immersion language school at their own expense.
Volunteers will receive on-site housing and food at no expense. However, volunteers must pay travel expenses to and from the country of service. A small monthly stipend is given to volunteers.
Volunteers will have access to basic primary healthcare services from on-site NPH clinics during their stay. Extraordinary care can be sought outside of NPH, but the applicant will have to assume all costs and burden of the services. All volunteers will receive health insurance through their sending office or NPH International. Plan details and expectations are explained during the application process.
Those interested in applying for volunteer service with NPH should fill out the online application form. Once you have been accepted as a volunteer, you will be asked to submit a completed Health Statement (English | Spanish) with your doctor's signature.
