The role of the catechist varies home to home but the general aim of the position is to enhance religious education and guide spiritual formation with our children in NPH.
Catechists often help in religious education. The volunteer in this role might be asked to teach religious education or participate in school activities. In addition, catechists will help with all sacrament preparation and work with our children in their basic preparation for Baptism, First Communion and Confirmation.
Mass is celebrated in our NPH homes at least once a week and the catechist will help the Religion Department with mass preparation, especially for larger masses to celebrate big events in the home, such as Easter or Christmas. The volunteer will also help with daily/mass and reflection with staff or groups of children.
Some NPH homes have youth groups, with regular activities, which organize retreats plan service events and assist in on-site masses.
The volunteer in this role ideally has experience in this field and also has experience working with children.
Each volunteer chooses an hogar (group of children of the same age living together) at the beginning of their year. Each home’s Volunteer Coordinator will communicate the expectations for hogar time. Usually, it is six days a week, 6 to 8 p.m., but this might vary per home. This has been described as the most fulfilling part of volunteering, the bond and relationships formed with their hogar of children.
Volunteers have every other weekend off, as well as up to 22 days of vacation time after four months of service. Vacation must be arranged according to the specific home’s policies.
All NPH volunteers receive room and board, access to medical care and a monthly stipend. Volunteers pay for their transportation to and from the home and medical insurance. Volunteers must serve for at least one year.
